TLC for your rugs

Modern rugs have become a staple of the home of individuals and families with exquisite taste. Using rugs for the different parts of the house is the easiest way to make the look of your home more versatile and flexible. Unfortunately, natural wear and tear and constant use can shorten the lives of your precious rugs: it is thus very important to take these easy steps to give your rugs the tender loving care that they need.

The first and most obvious tip is to frequently dust your rugs. Even area rugs which do not get trampled on often and wall rugs can quickly accumulate dust, especially if your home is constantly open to the outside air. A monthly dusting will perhaps be sufficient for these rugs. For rugs in high traffic areas, periodic cleaning using a vacuum cleaner would be more appropriate. A standard home vacuum should have enough power to get dirt and dust out of rug fibers and weave pores. Vacuuming these rugs at least once a week will dramatically lengthen their lives and even protect your family from inhaling dust.

Soil and other more unmanageable dirt may be removed using soap and hard water; avoid using hard detergents because these may ruin the color and fibers of the rug. Rub the dirt lightly with your fingers or a soft brush; excessively harsh brushing may ruin the fibers of the rug. Cheap rugs made of nonporous nylon would be easier to wash than rugs made of wool or cotton because the former do not hold water. But wool rugs, in general, are more resistant to dirt and dust than other rug types because wool does not store static electricity.

Keep the abovementioned guide in mind to improve the life of your rugs and maximize the benefits that you can get from these versatile and stylish home decors.
